McCue Participating in Frontiers of Engineering Symposium

Professor Ian McCue is one of 100 outstanding early career engineers selected

Northwestern Engineering’s Ian McCue has been selected to participate in the Grainger Foundation Frontiers of Engineering 2025 Symposium, scheduled for September 14-17 at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

Ian McCue

McCue is one of 100 outstanding early career engineers who will meet for an intensive 2 1/2-day symposium to discuss cutting-edge developments in four areas:

  • Advances in Neural Engineering
  • Next-Generation Computing/Quantum Computing
  • Fusion Energy
  • Sustainable Aerial Mobility

The Morris E. Fine Junior Professor in Materials and Manufacturing at the McCormick School of Engineering, McCue works to create next-generation structural materials for extreme environments such as hypersonics and fusion reactors. His group studies the design of these materials, their synthesis, and how they change when exposed to harsh conditions.

The goal of the Frontiers of Engineering program is to bring together engineers from all engineering disciplines and from industry, universities, and federal labs to facilitate cross-disciplinary exchange and promote the transfer of new techniques and approaches across fields to sustain and build US innovative capacity.

"I am excited to engage with emerging leaders in topics I am currently working in (fusion and aerospace) but also topics I have little familiarity with like neural engineering and quantum computing,” McCue said. “I aim to explore potential intersections between these fields and materials science, identify new directions for interdisciplinary collaboration, and contribute to shaping future US technological foundations."
